Breath in, breath out. I do not mind, I'm just trying to catch my breath after the spring 2020 season of New York Fashion Week. Usually I found myself (a tiny person) among very tall and incredibly beautiful people wondering what trends would emerge next year … and maybe grabbing a sandwich and Evian from the crafting tables. To be honest, sitting here and sharing every single hair, skin and makeup look in my iPhone would take more time than I have (MUST, people!), But the natural hair trends for 2020 are just too good to keep them for me.
Of course, it will always be about embracing or improving what we have, of course, but if the top runways are indicative, we will do the very best in the new year. This means that instead of a headband like today, you could weave some strips of fabric into a braid or bun. And these box braids that you like to get, because they shorten your set-up times? Yes, we beautify them with pearls and hair clips. Continue reading for five looks. I know that nasty / curly beauties will be thrilled to give it a try. (And if you want more, here's an overview of every beauty look from the Spring 2020 season.)
Fun with fabrics
I know that many of us (ie H. I) limit our use of materials to head wraps, but it is time to get creative so our hair does not have to be completely put away. Ursula Stephen, the stylist for Zendaya, Bebe Rexha and more, is not afraid to push the envelope, and has done just that for Maki Oh's 2020 runway show. A variety of styles were shown, but the favorite (at least according to social media) was this ultra-long, domina-inspired braid woven with bold fabric.
Pro Tip: If you're trying this look, use a hairpin to attach the fabric to the base of the ponytail, and a non-fluffy gel, such as the TreSemme Tres Ultra Firm Control Gel (3.79 USD), to outliers in the front for a sleek finish.
Ornate protective styles
The epic show by Pyer Moss at the King's Theater in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY, was a highly fashionable love affair for the black culture. These included, of course, a handful of hairstyles that expanded the spectrum of structured models' hair. The protective styling is a hallmark of the history of black hair, except that we see an upward trend in accessories this year.
As you can see, the only thing better than Box Braids is Box Braids, which are accented with pearls and barrettes because less is more. The same oversized hairpins and virgin ribbons that you normally reserve for free flowing strands are also for braids, twists and more officially approved ornaments. Just make sure you find those that are not too heavy, as a strong jolt will only hurt your edges and roots.
As someone who recently hummed all her curls, I was personally impressed to see so many shortcuts backstage and on the catwalk. While this year has been the year of fashion, it looks like 2020 will be the year we grow our threads just long enough to make them funny shapes.
Take Diandra Forrest to the runway of Maki Oh. With short, tapered sides and a curly, high top, the shape fits in perfectly with her stunning jaw and cheekbones, which I would like to trade for. Leave cutting as always to a specialist. If you prefer a new color, these are the shades that are already beating.
Wet and wavy strands
Laquan Smith's Spring 2020 Show was undoubtedly the sexy show of the season. With a collection that combines mixed animal prints and cowgirl authenticity (Alexa, Old Town Road game), hair and make-up were expected to be just as exciting. Coupled with the feline eyes that Sir John had dreamed up for Uoma Beauty, it was a sexy, backlashed act courtesy of Cantu.
Let's face it: The look of wet hair is about as classic as a bob or a topknot. However, I'm curious how it translates to structured hair (and is predictably elevated). Keep in mind that it is not absolutely necessary to dip your head in water to get the look of wet hair.
Good news for your forecast for 2020 and less good news for your bank accounts: we are expanding our wig collections! Ursula Stephens nod to Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry, is proof that we're only getting more innovative by styling seemingly simple wig looks. Maybe you're striving for feathers like this model on the runway of Maki Oh. Maybe you invest in a handmade thread. Be sure to contact these websites for the most natural strands.
